The ability to control the structure and function of nanoscale materials has revolutionized many fields, ranging from catalysis to disease therapy. By controlling the precise size and composition of nanoscale materials, we can develop nanoscale labels with desired properties. In the Welsher Lab, we aim to apply synthetic techniques to achieve nanocrystals with properties that allows us to probe even deeper into biological phenomena. These include:

  • Persistent, non-bleaching luminescence
  • “Stealth” surface coating
  • Enhanced luminescence via plasmon coupling
  • Asymmetric structures to encode orientation
